The best season to visit Japan is autumn with truly beautiful red and gold colored leaves. Visiting Sankeien Garden is one of wise choices to see the perfect foliage without crowds, just 40 mins from Yokohama Station. You do not need to visit big-name temples in always-crowded Kyoto.
Sankeien is the beautiful quiet garden carefully designed with historical buildings across Japan. The fall foliage lasts to mid November.
If you would like to take best foliage photos without crowds, enter the garden at 9:00 am when the main gate opens and go straight to the Choshuukaku area. Please See the marked points in the below map for the foliage.
Historic buildings-Choshukaku, Shunsoro are open to the public in autumn-tinted air till Until 10 Dec.
Please note that there are some area you can not use tripods for cameras in the garden.
Matcha Ceremony
In the Memorial hole You can have Matcha Ceremony (Old Japanese Tea Ceremony) with sweets at 500 yen, available from 10:00 am to 16:00 pm. There are How-to leaflets in English, Chinese and Korean leaflets so that you can enjoy the ceremony. It is a casual and quick version so you do not need take off your shoes and hold your knees on Tatami mat.
Tea Houses
There are several tea houses in the garden. It is a very good idea to have Japanese traditional noodles and sweets at the terrace.
Before/After Sankeien Garden
Near Sankeien Garden there is a good local Sushi bar which is loved by locals in decades. Here is the restaurant report in English.
Access
Get off at Sankeien-iriguchi( 35 minutes'ride) , and then walk to the Garden( 5 minutes) .
At Bus Platform No.2, take the Burari-Sankeien BUS(Operates only on saturdays and holidays).45 minutes'ride.Get off at the end of line(Sankeien Garden) .
